What DFW’s Hard Water Does to Your Plumbing (and How to Stop It)

The short answer: hard water is water carrying dissolved calcium and magnesium, and most of Dallas–Fort Worth’s municipal supply falls in the moderately hard to hard range. It doesn’t hurt you to drink it, but it leaves scale everywhere it’s heated or evaporated — shortening water heater life, clogging aerators and shower heads, spotting glassware, and forcing appliances to work harder. The fixes, in order of scope: a water softener for the whole house, a scale-inhibiting treatment for a specific appliance, or diligent maintenance if you’d rather not treat the water at all.

What actually makes water ‘hard’?

Hardness is a measure of dissolved mineral — mostly calcium and magnesium — picked up as water moves through limestone and other rock. It’s reported in grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million (ppm), and the common breakpoint is that anything above about 7 gpg is considered hard. North Texas surface water carries enough mineral that homeowners notice it in daily life: soap that won’t lather, film on shower doors, white crust on faucet spouts. Your city publishes an annual water quality report with the numbers for your specific supply — worth a look before you buy any treatment equipment.

What does scale do inside a water heater?

This is where hard water costs real money. When hard water is heated, dissolved mineral drops out of solution and settles as scale on the bottom of a tank or on the heat exchanger of a tankless unit. In a tank heater, that sediment layer insulates the burner from the water — the burner runs longer for the same hot water, the steel above it gets hotter than designed, and the sacrificial anode rod gets consumed faster. The practical result we see on service calls across Hurst, Bedford, and Fort Worth: tanks reaching the end of their life closer to 8 years than 12.

On tankless units, scale is even less forgiving — a scaled heat exchanger throttles flow and triggers error codes, which is why manufacturers require periodic descaling to keep the warranty intact.

Where else does hard water show up?

  • Faucet aerators and shower heads — mineral crust chokes the flow; unscrewing and soaking them in vinegar restores it.
  • Dishwashers and washing machines — scale on heating elements and valves, plus the cloudy film on glassware that no detergent fixes.
  • Toilets and tubs — rings and hard-to-remove buildup at the waterline.
  • Skin, hair, and soap use — hard water reacts with soap, so you use more of everything.
  • Ice makers and coffee equipment — the small appliances that fail first.

How do DFW homeowners fight hard water?

Three approaches, and they’re not mutually exclusive:

  1. Whole-home water softener (ion exchange). Removes the hardness minerals before they reach anything. This is the actual fix — everything downstream benefits, and it’s what we install most often for homeowners tired of replacing fixtures.
  2. Point-of-use or scale-inhibiting treatment. Protects a specific appliance (commonly a tankless heater) without softening the whole house.
  3. Maintenance only. Flush the water heater annually, descale a tankless unit on the manufacturer’s schedule, soak aerators. Cheapest up front; most work forever.

Note that softening and filtering are different jobs — a softener addresses hardness, while filtration targets taste, chlorine, sediment, and contaminants. Plenty of DFW homes end up wanting both, which is the comparison in the next step below.

What maintenance keeps scale in check?

Flush your tank water heater once a year (drain a few gallons off the bottom until it runs clear), have the anode rod inspected every few years, descale a tankless unit per the manufacturer’s interval, and soak aerators and shower heads in white vinegar when flow drops. Tioga’s Gator Family Membership ($149/year) bundles the annual plumbing evaluation and sewer camera inspection that catch this kind of buildup before it turns into a replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Is DFW’s hard water safe to drink?

Yes — calcium and magnesium are not health hazards, and municipal supplies meet drinking-water standards. Hardness is a plumbing and appliance problem, not a safety one.

How do I find out how hard my water is?

Check your city’s annual water quality report, or use an inexpensive test strip. If you want it measured at the tap along with an assessment of your equipment, we’ll test it during a service visit.

Does a water softener use a lot of salt?

A typical household softener uses roughly a bag of salt per month, varying with hardness and water use. Salt-free conditioners exist but they inhibit scale rather than removing hardness.

Will a softener fix my low water pressure?

Only if scale in fixtures is the cause. Pressure loss can also come from a failing pressure regulator or a supply-line leak — see our guide on slab leak warning signs if pressure dropped suddenly.

Does hard water void my water heater warranty?

Manufacturers commonly require documented maintenance — flushing on tanks, descaling on tankless. Skipping it is a frequent reason warranty claims get denied, so keep your service records.

How much does a water softener cost to install?

It depends on the unit and where it ties into your plumbing. Tioga quotes softener and filtration installs flat-rate in writing before work starts, after seeing your water and your setup.

Next step: softener, filtration, or both?

Softening and filtering solve different problems, and buying the wrong one is the most common mistake we see. Compare what each actually removes and what a DFW home typically needs.
