Smell Gas in Your House? Do These Five Things First

The short answer: if you smell gas, do not touch any light switch, appliance, or phone inside the house. Get everyone outside, leave the door open behind you, and from outside call 911 and your gas utility’s emergency line. Then — and only after the area is clear — call a licensed plumber to find and repair the leak. Natural gas is odorless on its own; the rotten-egg smell is mercaptan, an odorant utilities add specifically so a leak reaches your nose before it reaches an ignition source.

What should I do the moment I smell gas?

  1. Get everyone out. People and pets, out the nearest door. Don’t stop to gather things.
  2. Don’t create a spark. No light switches, no garage door opener, no thermostat, no landline, no phone calls from inside, no candles, no starting a car in an attached garage.
  3. Leave the door open. If a window is already open, leave it. Don’t go around opening windows — that’s time spent inside.
  4. Call from outside. 911 first if the smell is strong, then your gas utility’s 24-hour emergency number (Atmos Energy serves much of the DFW area).
  5. Don’t go back in until the fire department or the utility tells you the structure is clear.

What should I never do during a suspected gas leak?

Three things cause the worst outcomes: flipping electrical switches (the arc inside a switch is an ignition source), trying to find the leak yourself with a flame or lighter, and shutting the gas off at the meter with a wrench if you don’t know what you’re doing — a damaged meter valve makes the situation worse and the utility handles that step. If you have an appliance shutoff valve you can reach safely on your way out, closing it is fine; anything more, leave to the responders.

How do I know it’s gas and not something else?

Gas leaks announce themselves three ways: the sulfur or rotten-egg odor, a hissing or whistling sound near a line or appliance connection, and dead or dying vegetation in a line over a buried yard line. Physical symptoms in the household — headaches, dizziness, nausea that improve outdoors — also point to a gas or combustion problem and are their own reason to evacuate. A sewer-gas smell (also sulfurous) is a different problem: it usually comes from a dry drain trap and doesn’t hiss.

What causes gas leaks in DFW homes?

From our service calls: corroded or shifted yard lines (North Texas clay soil moves and stresses buried pipe every wet-dry cycle), aging flex connectors behind ranges and dryers, loosened fittings at water heaters and furnaces, and — more often than homeowners expect — unpermitted DIY gas work that never got a pressure test. The last one is why Texas requires licensed work here: gas work in DFW jurisdictions carries a permit and a pressure-test inspection, and Tioga pulls that permit and schedules the inspection as part of the job.

What does a plumber do to find and fix it?

Once the structure is cleared, a licensed plumber isolates the system and pressure-tests it — gauge on the line, gas off, watching for pressure loss over a timed interval. That test tells us whether the leak is in the yard line, the house piping, or an appliance connection, without guesswork. Tioga Plumbing performs all gas work under a Texas Master Plumber license (M-13661), quotes flat-rate in writing before we start, and every repair carries the $25,000 Good Contractors List guarantee. We answer emergency calls 24/7, 365.

Frequently asked questions

Who do I call first — 911 or the plumber?

911 and your gas utility, from outside the house. A plumber comes after the area is confirmed safe; we repair the leak, we don’t clear the structure.

Is it safe to sleep in the house if the smell is faint?

No. A faint smell still means gas is escaping, and concentrations change as a house closes up overnight. Treat every gas odor as a leave-now situation.

Does a gas leak repair require a permit in Texas?

In most DFW jurisdictions, yes — gas work carries a permit and a pressure-test inspection. Tioga files the permit in your city and schedules the inspection; the closed-out permit goes with your invoice.

Can I smell a leak from a buried yard line?

Sometimes, but not always — soil disperses the odorant. Dead grass in a line over the pipe, an unexplained jump in gas usage, or a hissing sound near the meter are the other tells.

Why do I smell gas only near one appliance?

That usually points at the flex connector or the shutoff fitting at that appliance — common on ranges, dryers, and water heaters. It’s still a leak, and it still needs a pressure test rather than a soap-bubble guess.

Does carbon monoxide smell like gas?

No — carbon monoxide is completely odorless, which is why CO detectors matter. Gas odor and CO are separate hazards; a poorly venting gas appliance can produce CO with no gas smell at all.

Next step: if the culprit is an aging water heater

Gas water heaters are one of the most common sources of the fitting leaks we find, and an old one is often worth replacing rather than re-fitting. If yours is past ten years, compare what goes in its place before you spend money on the old one.
