Why do big plumbing quotes deserve a second look?
Because the scope, not the hourly rate, is what makes a plumbing job expensive — and scope is where honest professionals genuinely disagree. Two plumbers can look at the same slab leak and propose different work: one reroutes a single line, another repipes the house. Both can be defensible. But a quote can also be inflated, or built on a diagnosis nobody verified with a camera or a pressure test. On a $3,000–$12,000 decision, an hour of a second licensed opinion is cheap insurance.
What should I bring to the appointment?
- The written quote — itemized if you have it.
- Photos, video, or camera footage the other company showed you.
- The age of the system — water heater date sticker, when the home was built, when it was last repiped.
- Your history — prior leaks, repeat clogs, past repairs on the same line.
- What they told you would happen if you waited. Urgency claims are worth verifying.
What does Tioga actually do on the visit?
We diagnose the problem independently rather than grading someone else’s paperwork — electronic leak location for suspected slab leaks, a camera for sewer questions, a pressure test for gas or supply concerns. Then you get our written flat-rate price for the work we’d actually do, so you’re comparing two real numbers instead of a number against a feeling. If their quote is fair and their scope is right, we’ll tell you that. That happens, and it’s a legitimate outcome of the visit.
What if the two quotes disagree on scope?
That’s the most useful result, because it means the underlying question is unsettled — usually ‘repair the failure’ versus ‘replace the system.’ We’ll walk you through the evidence for each and what it means over your time horizon in the house. Two worked examples: slab leak repair vs. whole-home repipe and tank vs. tankless water heater cost.
What’s the catch?

Do I have to tell the other company?

We don’t price-match — our flat rates are our flat rates. What we do is tell you honestly what the job needs and what we’d charge for it.
What if I already paid a deposit elsewhere?
You can still get a second opinion. Whether a deposit is refundable is between you and that company — check the contract you signed before making any decision.
